We generally stock oyster grain spawn at all times, but we will custom produce grain spawn of other varieties, including sawdust or plug spawn, within 2-4 weeks.
I have been cloning and trialing strains of local mushrooms since 2007. As of 2012,
- I have developed 2 varieties of tree oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus) that I feel are excellent cultivars for growing on steamed or boiled straw (or straw/hay mixes.) Both of these varieties were cloned from specimens found in north central Vermont and the spawn is only available through Wild Branch Mushrooms. The oysters are intended for large and small scale production of fresh mushrooms, the mycelium can also be used for mycofiltration or bioremediation uses.
- I have 1 local King Stropharia (Stropharia rugosa-annulata) variety that is intended for growing semi-wild in beds of wood chips and other mulch, companion planting with garden crops, and for setting up filtration mats to clean up farm run-off. This variety has been overwintering in one unprotected patch for 4 years now.
- I have 1 variety of the Garden Oyster (Hyspizigus ulmarius), which is intended to be grown in the same way as Stropharia. While this variety colonizes woodchips very quickly, and can produce large quantities of mushrooms within 6 weeks, I have found that (at least in northern Vermont) it winter-kills.
I am developing many other varieties, which are only available through a custom order, these include Chicken of the Wood, Turkey Tail, Hemlock Reishi, Reishi, Tinder Polypore, Bear’s Head Tooth, King Oyster, Shaggy Mane, Nameko, Birch Polypore, and Chaga.
